I have been playing games really a lot before I started playing music. And it’s interesting because I think that’s a reminder we should give to all of the parents in the world, is if your children like something that you feel is not productive, that thing can end up being extremely productive and can be a very good career path.”įX: “It’s true. All those years of playing Dungeons and Dragons when I was a kid and playing video games on Nintendo, et cetera, and my parents being like, “Stop playing this video game” … They were not that bad about that … That ended up becoming our careers. Mat: “One thing that can sum us up very well is that we figured out that geekiness can end up paying and be very rewarding. What would you say shaped you into the person you are today and where did the passion for video games and music come from? Additionally, FX Dupas teaches film scoring and game audio at the University of Montreal, where he just completed a doctorate in interactive music composition for video games and multimedia. Vibe Avenue has since become one of Montreal’s main audio and music outsourcing studios for video games, winning several Best Audio awards along the way. He is also the founder of the Montreal international film scoring competition.Ĭomposer and audio artist FX Dupas co-founded Vibe Avenue with Mathieu Lavoie in 2013. He holds a doctorate in composition, obtained at the University of Montreal in 2012, and has composed music for more than 60 films, commercials and video games, as well as many concert pieces. He has also been an associate professor at the Université du Québec à Montréal (UQAM) since 2013, specializing in film and video game classes. Mathieu Lavoie is an award-winning composer, audio artist, radio host and co-founder of Vibe Avenue. Since we switched to a more personal tone fairly early on, I would love to give you the official info on these two before we dive into the interview. After a few days of working together, I took the chance to interview Mat and FX on their experience in the game industry and composing skills. Coincidentally, I was chosen to play the game live on stage and have described the experience already here on Obilisk. They were at Cologne for the World Premiere of their Live-To-Game concert featuring an orchestrated version of the music for Spearhead Games‘ Stories: Path of Destinies performed live by a whole orchestra with live gameplay. The studio is based in Montréal, Québec and has been involved with many music projects for indie developers for games like Stories: Path of Destinies, Omensight, Ultimate Chicken Horse, Livelock, Oddmar and The Darwin Project among many more. During Gamescom 2018 and the parallel music festival of Soundtrack_Cologne, I got the chance to have an extended interview session with both co-founders, Mathieu Lavoie (Mat) and FX Dupas (FX), of the award-winning music composition and sound design company Vibe Avenue.
